So to be fully transparent my review for this kayak is 4.5 out of 5 due to a few little things. The first is the rudder pull cable is just 550 cord which worries me because if it ever snaps I’m not sure what to do. Now to be clear there is a safety pin on the rudder you can use to flip and lock it down if that situation happens so you’ll have to be very careful around shallow water or things like submerged vertical structure but at least you won’t be totally rudderless Second issue is a benefit for transport but a little bit hard to deal with on water and that’s the length and width of the vessel. It fits perfectly in my 2017 Kia Soul but there lies the issue. The 9.5ft length is great for storing, transporting, and being on the water. But it being under 10ft long means it’s probably just an inch or two too narrow for a guy my size. This kayak is perfect for anyone 5’10” and under. I’m 6’2” and 215lbs so the first day on water I had to learn how to sit in it so I didn’t feel super wobbly. If you are a taller person you can still use this vessel safely and comfortably but you’ll have to do a lot of adjustment to the pedals and seat back till you find that sweet spot. Overall I’ve had fun with the kayak; it is my first one ever and I think I’m gonna get a a lot of good times out on the water because of it.
I have been looking into getting my first fishing kayak for about a year. I live in an apartment, so I searched for something that wouldn’t take up too much space. I have a 2014 Ford Fusion and am easily able to transport the kayak in the backseat of my vehicle. I love the gear tracks and have added a few attachments (cup holder, rod holder, camera). I look forward to adding a trolling motor to this beauty but the fin drive and paddle work just perfect! I can’t wait to get back on the water!
I am a 71-year-old with COPD and back issues. I bought this because it can be split in two for me to carry. Yes it is several trips to the water....paddle, pedals, fish finder, and life jacket. My previous small boat experience was canoes. This seems fairly stable....and I do have balance issues. Myself I would not try standing in it in water, but those with good balance could. I could have saved over $600 by buying from the importer, but I wanted the 30 day money back and the Amazon 'safety net' and they were able to deliver before we left on this trip. I do not plan on returning it now that I have used it. Very stable while pedaling once you get used to it. Rudder works well. My only complaints are the front rod holder is not easy for me to access with my fat belly. The other two are behind and twisting ain't so easy any more, but I can do it. Picture is in the bed of my truck before I hitched the 5th wheel RV. No interference when hitched. If I didn't have the generator in there both halves could have fit up front of the hitch.
I thought that as a 75 year old man this activity might be wrong for me. But getting modular version was just the right thing. I even got the middle section but have not had the use for it yet. But can't wait till I have someone to go with me and explore. Love what I've done so far. Thanks Reel Yaks for a truly well made product. Looking forward to doing more business with you.
Amazing, I ordered it and it arrived in 2 days! That's mind blowing. Fits in my subaru outback perfectly and the pedal drive is so smooth. Took it out for my first time today and already caught something. This kayak is awesome! Also it was a lot easier being able to pedal to my spot than paddle and faster to. You can build up some speed on this.
